COLLABORATIVE ENDEAVORS
A few hundred cans of paint and a hodgepodge cast of creative hands…POOF! One week later a mural is nearly accomplished. Although the mural wasn’t completed before the unveiling, those who attended the celebration this past First Friday appreciated the message it sought to express. The goal of the project is to visually remind the public of environmental issues and possible solutions within their community. It was mind boggling for most of the people who live in Phoenix to learn that a majority of the city’s water and electricity originates from “Indian Land”.
The mural will wrap up within the week. It was a stressful but an educational experience helping facilitate a community mural. Thanks to Bobb Copper of the Valley Youth Theatre and Ray Cabrera of Downtown Phoenix Partnership for supporting the vision of Estria Water Writes, Black Mesa Water Coalition, and those who want to make an artistic difference. Thanks to Kim of the Downtown Devil as well as the others whom provided media coverage. For more information about Estria and BMWC, follow the links below.
The mural is on the south side of Valley Youth Theatre which is located on 1st St. & Filmore, Phoenix, AZ.

GRAY “I Wanna Go Back”
Post punk, experimental art-rock, featuring Jean Michel Basquiat. In downtown New York City, in 1979, painter Jean-Michel Basquiat and performance artist Michael Holman founded their industrial-sound band, Gray. Jean named the band after Gray’s Anatomy, an important reference source for his paintings and the perfect name to capture the haunting, machine-like ambient music the band wrote and performed. Besides Basquiat and Holman, other members of the original group were Nicholas Taylor and Justin Thyme. Vincent Gallo was a member of the band for a short period of time nearer the end of their first incarnation. In the Whitney Museum’s catalogue for Basquiat’s 1991 Retrospective, Robert Farris Thompson, professor of Anthropology at Yale, wrote this about Gray: “They worked the Mudd Club, CBGB’s, and Hurrah’s in New York, where Blondie and the Talking Heads were at that time emerging. They performed, in other words, at the epicenter of New Wave. Here they contended for space and recognition with a style that, in Basquiat’s own words, was ‘incomplete, abrasive, and oddly beautiful. “PLEASE, PLEASE, BABY LEMONADE…”
Spray paint with acrylic outlines on 3rd St. & Roosevelt, Phoenix, AZ. The wall is located within the courtyard of the recently established Scratch French Cafe/Bakery and Vietnamese restaurant. I was one of several artists that were selected to paint walls curated by Cole Reed of Green Haus.
It’s a bike themed courtyard, so I decided to depict animals running with road bikes. I painted animals that once existed in the area but due to years of development were pushed to the outskirts of the city. It’s a psychedelic journey with desert animals.

Miles Davis BITCHES BREW (full album)
Bitches Brew is a studio double album by jazz musician Miles Davis, released in April 1970 on Columbia Records. The album continued his experimentation with electric instruments previously featured on his critically acclaimed In a Silent Way album. With the use of these instruments, such as the electric piano and guitar, Davis rejected traditional jazz rhythms in favor of a looser, rock-influenced improvisational style. (via wiki)

“We waited and waited. All of us. Didn’t the shrink know that waiting was one of the things that drove people crazy? People waited all their lives. They waited to live, they waited to die. They waited in line to buy toilet paper. They waited in line for money. And if they didn’t have any money they waited in longer lines. You waited to go to sleep and then you waited to awaken. You waited to get married and you waited to get divorced. You waited for it to rain, you waited for it to stop. You waited to eat and then you waited to eat again. You waited in a shrink’s office with a bunch of psychos and you wondered if you were one.” - Charles Bukowski
